To provide learners with a recognized certificate at the first exit point from compulsory GETC Schooling that will allow them access to qualifications at the further education and training level. Passing Grade 10 enables access of learners to Grade 11(CAPS).
Learners will gain competencies in basic communication, languages and literacy skills; values in home language, cultures and literacy will be developed in a multi-cultural country context; Skills in Mathematical literacy or Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, Life Orientation, Economics and other Management Sciences will be developed. This grade sets a foundation for a child’s prospective career options when they leave school eventually.
Further Education & Training Certificate (FETC)-Senior Phase: Grade 11-

To provide learners with a recognized certificate that enables them access to National Senior Certificate Grade 12 (Matriculation Level). At Grade 11, learners confirm their life long career streams by finally choosing between the commercial and Science paths of learning. Passing Grade 11 opens access for learners many NQF Level Qualifications. At Grade 11, the learner concretizes their career subject choices made in Grade 10. A child still has the opportunity to change atmost two subjects if they are not comfortable with their earlier choices.
The various competencies achieved by learners in Grade 10 will be emphasized in Grade 11 to prepare candidates for their final year of the National Senior Certificate or grade12. Learners may be allowed to switch career paths at this stage but under very strict conditions. Mathematics, Maths Literacy & Science subjects are emphasized at this level to ensure that learners are well grounded for Matric and the different university career options.

National Senior Certificate (CAPS): Grade 12,

This is the FETC (General Certificate), Known as the National Senior Certificate when offered in schools. It is aimed at learners in Grade 12. These learners leave schooling either for further learning or employment in various work places. The FETC (General) is the qualification awarded to learners who achieve the exit level learning outcomes stipulated in the Curriculum & Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS).
The National Senior Certificate equips learners irrespective of their socio-economic background, race, gender, or disability with the knowledge, skills and values necessary for self fulfillment and meaningful participation in society as citizens of a free country. It also provides them access to higher education and vocational education and/or occupational qualifications in the further education or higher education bands. Lastly, the CAPS training facilitates the transition of learners from educational institutions to workplaces and provides potential employers with a profile of learner’s competencies.
